Over the past four years, our Reproductive Justice Project has supported incredible work Milwaukee thanks to our donors and matching grants from the Groundswell Fund. Groundswell has once again offered us a $75,000 match, but we have a ways to obtain the full match.
The Reproductive Justice Projects funds programs such as CORE/El Centro’s Proyecto Salud, in which a network of Community Health Promoters (or “promotores”) educate, advocate, and work within Milwaukee’s Latino communities in order to improve health outcomes.
After giving birth to a child with Down Syndrome, promotor Alexandra Estrada founded the first and only support group in Wisconsin for Latina mothers of children with Down Syndrome. The group connects Latina mothers of special needs children and provides access to valuable resources.
This group recently met with legislators in Madison to make their case against budget cuts that would cut special education programs from public schools, reduce treatment coverage for special needs children, and cut prenatal services for undocumented Latina women. Because of funds raised through the Reproductive Justice Project, these women were able to take action to improve the lives of Latino families in Milwaukee.
